**Important Note: The in-home study has received the maximum amount of participants for granite testing. However, BuildClean is also looking for test-homes with slate, travertine, ceramic tile, Italian tile, concrete, fabricated stone or other types of solid surface materials indoors.**
BuildClean is conducting free in-home radon and radiation tests in the Greater Houston area to determine if certain natural stone and surface materials (including granite, shale, ceramic tile, travertine, concrete and many more) usedusing granite in indoor applications may emit harmful levels of radon and/or radiation over time. Radon has long been associated with lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses, and in 2005 the U.S. Surgeon General issued a national health advisory specifically warning that radon causes lung cancer.
In recent years, the use of granite, concrete and other surfacing natural stone indoors has increased dramatically in the United States, but we have neglected to do the research necessary to find out if these products are safe and healthy.
While much more scientific testing of granite and these other products by independent, respected laboratories is necessary - and a key part of BuildClean's mission - it is also essential that in-home testing be conducted as each house is different. Factors such as the size of the room, air circulation and the amount of granite or other surfacing product present may affect the level of radon or radiation in a room, even when comparing homes with the same surface material. The only way to ensure your own home is safe is to test.
Note: For its initial pilot study, BuildClean will only be testing a limited number of homes.
